About this website

This website was created because of a need.  Our family and our history is somewhat unknown and as a result of that i felt the need to make sure that the young ones in our family are able to research their own history.  I wanted others who think they might be related to have some sort of search tool, and most importantly, I wanted our family to communicate more with more distant relatives than they currently communicate with.  The journey began in September of 2000 when after speaking with Beverly Carlman about our history that I realized that we had no readily available reference guide.  Well Beverly Carlman had been researching our history and storing it into a database using the family tree maker software and I felt that the information held within the database was invaluable.  Being that I had recently gotten into web design as a hobby, I grabbed onto the idea of sharing the information and maybe even allowing others to communicate with us in their search to find their own history.  Anyhow, after creating a very simple layout with frames and light menu system, the bartlettfamily.com website was born.  What you see today is a result of my experience with database design, graphic design, and website design.  I hope everyone finds it as functional as I do!

Autobiography

Born in Danvers Mass in 1979, I began my life in a small town in southern Mass.  I then moved to Florida, back to Mass and then North Carolina where i finished my childhood and graduated from high school.  High school is where my interest in computers took a foothold.  After only one year with a computer, I was running the MAC lab at the high school and helping teachers with their computer woes.  Towards the end of the year I actually began servicing all the classroom workstations.
Right around the time of my high school graduation I took a summer job (it actually started before school ended) with INACOM(now bankrupt), where I helped in their upgrade deployment of workstations for Central Carolina Bank.  During that process I learned about various software and hardware utilities, HW/SW configurations, inventory management and how corporate environments work.  After completing the contract, I took some time off from working and concentrated on learning the inner workings of PC hardware, software and networking.
When I finally ran out of money, I took a typical "college" job and began my journey as a college student at Wake Technical Community College.  While there I took classes that fit the requirements to fulfill the Associate of Science degree as well as many computer related classes for electives.  As classes continued on I began to loose interest in the traditional college  subjects I was required to take and left the college in pursuit of my main interest, computers.
I left the college and went to ACTT(Advanced Computer Technology Training) in Raleigh to home my skills and find out the best way to go about getting certified to perform the services I provided as a hobbyist for a company as an employee.  Though that sounds like one of the pitches the training places throw out, they didn't have to convince me, I was already determined to head into IT.  Being as predisposed as a human can be to a subject, I finished my certification tests and was certified as of the last class.  My instructor commented to me many times that I was one of the best he had seen come thru and as many who I have helped have come to find out, I am really good!  Its not so much the knowledge as the intuition I have for solving problems.
As a result of the certification, I took a job with Carlman Booker Reis as a consultant and within months had moved down to Florida and was brought on as a full time Systems Administrator.  The challenge was worth the trip!  Once moved in, I proceeded to "cleanup" the mess left behind by the last guy and brought their systems up to par.  There I learned Exchange 5.5, DNS, the art of spam filtering, as well as how the guts of the internet truly functioned.  In return I provided security, stability,  enhanced performance and most importantly, virus prevention and control.  Being a Public Relations company, the virus problem they had was a priority and I will never forget the first time a major virus hit the internet and was stopped at the gate.  They have been virus free ever since.
Being that I work fast, I was done with CBRPR's systems within five months and was ready for my next challenge!  It was during my tour of duties at CBRPR that I learned why I loved computers so much, it was the unique challenge they and their users presented!  Anyhow, with CBRPR under my belt and still paying me as a consultant, I joined the ranks of the many IT workers without a job and teamed up with RHI consulting who found me a job with my current company, Community Health Centers, Inc.  They assigned me the challenge (they were not kidding) of fixing the Community Health Centers infrastructure.
Well after a few days of figuring out what exactly a "terminal" and "serial" network were, I began to research and learn how my new found systems worked.  Being that I know about Unix and had played with Linux, it wasn't all that far out, but it was a step back in time (some of the equipment was made before I was born).  Within a month I recognized the need for more help!!  RHI was kind enough to provide me with a technician who I then assigned tasks but not supervised (for some reason).  She helped me out a great deal as I came up with solutions to solve their main issue!  That being they were running out of serial network space and didn't have enough room to open another center which they were going to open shortly.  Given my situation, I actually found a way to make it work and so began CHC's journey to an Ethernet network with a WAN!  Just shortly, the solution was Ethernet based serial with VPN and dialup!  Though it was a solution that I was proud of, it was not a permanent solution.
As time dragged on and another consultant was brought in to (at the time) replace me, my boss left for a job doing what she loved.  The void left behind created an opportunity for me to stay, I personally think she was looking for someone to take her job so she could leave.  The other consultant was that person and although he ultimately didn't get it( the CFO did ), I don't think he had that much of a problem with it.
Immediately I was asked by the CFO to come up with a plan to bring CHC into the modern age of computing.  This was not new, as I had already submitted plans, but at least this time they were actually going to be considered(long story there that had more to do with company politics than me).  Well the final plan which included thin clients, a server farm, and a frame network was accepted and so the course of history was changed(well for CHC)!  Computers, servers, networking equipment, and networks were ordered and deployment plans were drawn up.  Given our shortage of staff (now 2 after a contract dispute with the technician), we proceeded with a general plan but the details were fuzzy.  Personally, I don't think months of planning could of prepared us for the mess that we had to untangle.  Though, I am glad to say, we had minimal down time, if any, during the deployment, which we did on the weekend(whohoo overtime!).  Every problem that we encountered was solved quickly and completely and within eight months, the upgrade was complete.  Now, you say, EIGHT MONTHS!!!, well we were working with sprint for WAN connectivity, they move with the speed of a snail in search of a nap.
When everything was complete, everyone had internet, everyone could be helped remotely, software configurations were standardized, networks were stable and everyone had a centralized email account!  I then proceeded on my quest to get them a new AIX server that would actually handle their business load efficiently.  And after receiving approval from the CFO, I ordered and setup the server and then proceeded to home my skills with AIX.  I also quickly became known to all around me as a technical genius and an innovator(YAY ME!).
Together me and my co-admin had finally brought the word MIS out of the mudd, washed it up, and spit shined it!  Respect, for the most part, was restored for the first time in CHC history.  The company then moved to Winter Garden in September of 2002, which we successfully transferred MIS with less than a half day of down time(don't ask why they didn't move on the weekend).  We brought the new server up in November and have been on it ever since.  Currently I am working on several projects that will further the MIS reach and functionality within CHC and at the same time preparing to open several new sites!
