Reunion 2002

Updated Info ( August 27th 2002 )

The hotel is giving us the opportunity to choose where we want our rooms: main building or poolside. YOU MUST CHOOSE VIA AN EMAIL TO ME because this is a special opportunity not available via usual reservation procedures. NEED TO KNOW RIGHT NOW!!!

Here are your choices:
1.  Main Building: Where the action is: take the elevator and walk out just a few feet from the front desk, meeting rooms, Bartlett Headquarters, lounge and restaurant. Perfect for those who can't walk well or just want the convenience. INDICATE IF YOU ARE HANDICAPPED OR WANT A SMOKING ROOM.
2.  Poolside: This is another wing of the hotel that opens up right to the pool, is closest to the beach access, but not as close to the restaurant, etc. Again, please indicate if you require a handicapped or smoking room.
3.  Bunking with Brother: Not really an option, but I wanted to put a little excitement into Brother's day with this email!

Horse Riding!!

All Horses for the 6 p.m. ride on Friday are reserved as a block for us. Reserve your horse(s) by e-mail to me and Heidi. Payment is to be made ($48.00 each) by Friday noon to the hospitality table at the hotel. First come first served, there are now 8 spots left. All horses are being ridden by our clan. Don't be left out!

I scream, you scream we all scream for ICE CREAM!
One of the highlights of the reunion will be our grand finale event Sunday night: the Bartlett Family Awards Banquet and Ice Cream Party. We will all make our own ice cream sundaes with a variety of yummy toppings. Even sugar-free ice cream will be available.
This is the one and only event for which we are being charged by the person -- and the hotel needs our RSVP count three days in advance.
Please RSVP to me via this email address. Let me know how many I should reserve for your group. If someone in your group is attending, but not eating ice cream (or will maybe just eat one scoop and that's it) DO NOT include them in the count. Overpaying is against the Bartlett religion. ;)

Love,
Cuz Lori

Updated Info ( August 24th 2002 )

A comprehensive packet was mailed to you today about all the fun we're going to have on Jekyll Island together. The three-page schedule included is pretty accurate. However, we will most likely need to update it as we get closer. For example, inadvertantly omitted are the 2 p.m. Saturday Kids Pool Olympic Games at the hotel pool. We'll have races, contests and even a money-dive (We sprinkle money on the bottom and the kids get to keep what they find. Now we have to figure out how to keep the adults out of the pool!) Nearly all of the events will have prizes, or ribbons, or a trophy.

"It's shore fun to be a Bartlett!" See you soon!
Love,
Lori

Updated Info ( July 15th 2002 )

Straight from our Bartlett Reunion Deputies of Details (Phil and Heidi), here's LOTS more of important information about the reunion! They made a return trip to the Bartlett Reunion Resort and have compiled this important report. Thanks, deputies, for a job well done! :) Oh, one question, were you 'decent' when you conducted that room doorlock research? Inquiring minds want to know!

Heidi and I just got back from a final checkout of Jekyll Island. It's a tough job but we did it. You're going to like this place! Lori will be mailing you a map that shows you all the things you can do on the island. If you haven't been there, the island is in Brunswick, Georgia just 14 miles off of exit 29 of I-95. It is 52 miles from the Florida border.

RESERVE YOUR ROOMS NOW!
If you haven't made your reservations DO IT NOW! Guaranteed rates are good only until July 30th. $75.00 a night for regular room. Call the Holiday Inn at 1-800-753-5955 or 912-635-3311 If you need special assistance ask for Reggie, the group sales manager and mention the Bartlett reunion. If you can't get satisfaction, call me at 352-351-0085 or email me at pcarlman@cfl.rr.com

SHADE AND PARADISE
You cannot see the beach from the hotel because it is protected by huge dunes with tall oak trees. That means we can hold the reunion in anything up to a category 3 hurricane! There are three wooden planked 300 foot walkways over the dunes to the beach. It is worth the short stroll! The tides during our stay have low tide around breakfast, and high tide around 2 p.m. That is PERFECT because we can play on the beach at low tide while it is cool and swim in the water at high tide when it is hot. And there's LOTS of beach to play on when the tide is out. When the tide is out, the beach is over 300 feet wide. The sand is flat, firm and clean for as far as you can see in either direction. Perfect sand for sandcastles, volleyball, badminton and even a football game. (if you get wet you are definitely out of bounds. If you drown going for a wide out, substitutions will be permitted.)

MOONRISE PARTY?
Sunrise will be at about 7 A.M. and Sunset is at 8 P.M. A 1/3 moon will be out from about 1 A.M. to 3:45 in the afternoon. We expect everyone to be at the moonrise party Saturday at one in the morning. Don't wait for me, I expect to be late for that.... LET'S BOOGIE!  Don't forget your boogie boards because it's perfect beach for it. We suspect that body surfing is probably great at about half tide because of the long flat run over the sand, but we didn't see it. The beach at low tide is perfect for jogging, or better for making money by betting someone that the next jogger that comes by won't be smiling. (Ever seen one that was?) At high tide there is only about ten feet of beach to play on, but that doesn't last long.

BIKING...There are over 20 mile of paved biking paths and plenty of bike rentals on the island. Bike rentals are about $18. per day.
..AND MORE...Right at the Holiday Inn you can rent beach umbrellas, chairs, bicycles, fun cycles, ocean kayaks, and even boogie boards. You can make reservations for these at Barry's Beach Services: 912-638-8053.
I SWEAR IT WAS THIS BIG!!!
Fishing and dolphin watching expeditions are also available. Call Coastal Expeditions at 912-265-0392 for more info. The fishing pier at the other end of the island is free and great. Just across from its entrance at the RV park, you can buy a fishing license.

AIR TOURS
There is an airport on the other end of the island (elevation 12 feet!) and you can take air tours starting at $25. per person. More info at 912-222-2448

SUNSET HORSEBACK RIDE...ON THE BEACH
For those of you arriving early, like Heidi and I: Thursday evening we are taking a sunset horseback ride on the beach, which will start at the fish pier at the other end of the Island. The ride is $45 per person. Contact Victoria's Carriage and Trail Rides at 912-635-9500.

TENNIS PRACTICE
For those of you who like tennis, there are two tennis courts on site. They are not very crowded but you should make reservations for them at the front desk once you arrive.

WET AND WILD
There is a water park with two large slides only about a mile from the Holiday Inn. You can see them on your right as you come over the bridge to the island.

GOURMET DINING -- OR NOT!
If you look to your left as you come over the bridge you will see the small marina that has the Latitude 31 restaurant that we believe is the best run restaurant on the Island. If you want a great dining experience go there. Go to Bluebeard's restaurant at your own risk. It is State run, their one hour wait was two and a half hours when all was said and done. They claim they're better now. For those on a budget, note the Huddle House you pass on the right just after you get off the bridge onto the island.

PRACTICE PRACTICE FOR THE BIG TOURNAMENT!
There's miniature golf available for the kids and me about halfway down the island.

MILLIONAIRE HOME TOURS
There are tours of the historic district at 10 and 11 A.M. as well as 1:30 and 3:00 in the afternoon for $25.00 per person or $35.00 per couple

AND THE LITTLE ONE SAID "ROLL OVER!"
Want to pack a lot of people in a room? Here's the deal. Rooms are normal size Holiday Inn rooms. They either have one King Size bed or two double beds. You can rent a cot, on a first come basis for $10 per night. Of course, being Bartletts, we know that at the beach we bring air mattresses. We only use them on the beach right? (Get the sheets off them before the maid shows up, silly.) The pool/ocean facing rooms have a balcony/porch. Street side rooms do not. The rooms have coffee makers, irons, and ironing boards. It appears you can hook up a VCR to the tv if you bring one and there are data jacks for your computer.

MORE DETAILS ON THE ROOMS
If you want room to spread out, there are only a few suites available. They are on the 4th floor of the main building. There are 2 types, one sleeps 4 or 5 with a king size bed in the bedroom and a pull out sofa in the adjoining living room. The other sleeps 5 or 6 and has two bedrooms separated by a living room. One bedroom has a king size bed, the other two double beds, and the living room between the two bedrooms has a pull out sofa. Lori already has reserved one of the suites, there were 4 or 5 left as of today. they tell us that if you want the most peace and quiet, the 4th floor street side rooms are your best bet.
You can rent a refrigerator and microwave for $10. per night. Their refrigerator is impossibly small. A 12 pack of drinks and a 6 pack will absolutely fill it. The good news is they have plenty of ice machines for your coolers. There are also snack machines and soda machines throughout. Tip: You may want to go to your room before ordering a fridge. If it is already there, you won't be charged. but then, right in the middle of your stay they may come to take it for someone else. But Bartletts are born gambler right?

GAMBLING, TOO!
And speaking of gambling, there's even a dinner casino cruise available on the Emerald Princess Monday thru Friday at 7 P.M.to Midnight. Cost is 10-$25.00 Call 800-842-0115 if interested.

Cable TV selection is rather limited. if you want to watch the weather channel you've gotta go to the lobby. But if you are doing that, you should probably have stayed home. All types of movies can be purchased on cable for about 10 bucks each, or there are videos available on the Island.

Lori will be sending you a hotel map to request your room. All buildings are interconnected so even if we have a category 2 hurricane, you are under cover between buildings.
There are 2 washers and dryers available and quarters are gotten at the front desk.

SUN BATHE OR SHADE BATHE!
The swimming pool is really well set up. It is circled by tall oak trees, which means when you are in the pool you are in the sun, but when you are seated on the side, you can always find shade. There is a kiddy pool and a snack bar at the pool.

RESEARCH WE DIDN'T EXPECT TO CONDUCT
Important tip: If you leave your room and don't want it to latch behind you DO NOT just close it gently so it doesn't latch. If you do, the nasty little computer in your door will wait til you are just out of reach, then sneakily retract the latch and close the door and lock it. Instead, put the night safety latch bar in between the door and the jam. Ask us how we know about this...
Shawn Matthews turns 17 at the reunion. We intend to make it a memorable event....
We'll be there Wednesday night and look forward to seeing the early birds.

New Reservation Information! ( June 29th 2002 )

Dear Fellow Bartletts,

As you all know, Cherie, Phil, Heidi, Roni, Bill, Jim and I 'sacrificed' our Memorial Day weekend to stay on idyllic Jekyll Island in Georgia. We suffered through the swaying palm trees, ocean breezes, breathtaking views and a beach that kept the kids busy for hours at a time (sand dollars! crabs! conch shells! safe jellyfish! minnows to catch!) We fell in love with the island all over again.

However, the hotel we reserved has deteriorated since we last visited. The promised renovation hadn't even started, and was going to be in full swing during our reunion. Other bad experiences made it obvious that this hotel could not live up to our high expectations. So, we all hopped in the van and inspected pretty much every other resort on the island.

Fortunately we found another place that's even better. So, the reunion will no longer be held at the Comfort Inn Island Resort. We have been allowed to cancel our stay there without penalty of any kind because of the renovation promise made to us last fall.

PARADISE FOUND!
Not a mile down the road on the island is a beautiful Holiday Inn Beach Resort in a beautiful shady setting nestled under majestic oak trees. It's right on a pristine beach that's nearly private. The only reason we didn't check it out before was that their rates looked beyond our reach. But Phil and Heidi met with the manager and explained our situation. We'll be able to do even better at this newer, nicer resort thanks to their negotiating skills.

AMENITIES OF THE HOLIDAY INN BEACH RESORT:
-full on-site dining room for breakfast, lunch and dinner
-kids eat breakfast FREE with paying adult
-Friday night all-you-can-eat seafood buffet

Throughout our stay we'll have a room where you can leave messages, sign up for events, leave photo displays and genealogy information.

DEADLINE FOR RESERVATIONS TO GUARANTEE THIS RATE: JULY 30th!!!

Be sure to cancel any reservation remaining at the Comfort Inn Resort. If you have any problem THERE, ask for Carolyn Morgan. She's been just great about this.

Any questions? Let me know or contact Phil and Heidi at 352-351-0085. They are my new "Assistants in Charge of Details."

PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO ANY BARTLETT WITHOUT EMAIL. I've not received any snail-mail addresses for the non-technical side of our family.

BARTLETTS AND YOU IN 2002!
Be there or be talked about!

Recent Email to Family ( May 22 2002 )

It's a tough job, but somebody's gotta do it!

This weekend your "Bartlett Family Reunion Committee" is going to stay at the Comfort Inn Island Suite Hotel to become more familiar with the property.  It's a holiday weekend and should give us a good idea about what it's going to be like there over the Labor Day holiday weekend.  Staying in the oceanfront suites with balconies is a sacrifice we are willing to make for our family! :)

Do you have any specific questions about the resort?  Email them to me and I'll get answers for you.

The hotel is gathering brochures on the golf, biking, tours, horsebackriding, etc. opportunities on the island, and I will be sending them on to you (IF you provided me with your snail mail address.  Remember, if you don't get a Christmas card from us, we don't have your street address!)
